A short surf film that challenges expectations of what a ‘surf’ or ‘charity’ film should be. With punchy visuals and a soundscape composed entirely of recordings made from found plastic, ‘Turning Tides’ exposes the devastation our oceans are currently experiencing and challenges us all to do something about it. Good Surf Wax – Episode 1
Director – Josh Rufford

Of all the people who should be treading as lightly as possible on Mother Earth, surfers would have to be at the top of the list. But here’s the thing. Most surf wax, one of simplest, most crucial ingredients in the surf bliss equation, is made from a petrochemical base. Meaning? That although you can’t see it, it breaks down into tiny particles, and seeps into the water and the food chain. A fish full of petrochemicals is a dead fish. Ditto for anything that eats it. Created by Josh Rufford Art Direction by Adam Harriden Music by Dear Doonan (recorded at Thomas Studios). We are also currently working on Episode 2!

salt of the earth
Director – Dean Saffron

Tom Wegener’s story as a master shaper based in the Australian community, where he makes amazing traditional handmade wooden surfboards. He’s an icon as both a shaper and an all-around character. “It’s like a symphony as you peel the wood off with your hand tools,” he says. “And there’s so much to the character of every piece of wood.” Tom Wegener has long been considered a master shaper, but it is in the genre of finless craft that he has really earned his rep.

Spot Stands Up
Director – Zack McCune

From the oldest known dog surfing film comes, SPOT STANDS UP – a silent movie rescored by Larisa Berger and reanimated by Zack McCune. While the earliest known surf film was made by Thomas Edison in 1906, the earliest known dog surfing film is from 1930. That film features “Night Hawk” the dog, surfing with his owner in the film “On the Waves at Waikiki.” But in watching older surf movies on the Internet Archive, Berger and McCune discovered that the 1926 “Sons of the Surf” film features a dog surfing and even NAMES the dog shown.

In Dancing Days Of Dawn
Director – Chris Miyashiro

A crowd favourite in film festivals around the world, In Dancing Days Of Dawn is a wild journey to find purpose and meaning. This story is a poetic peak into the mind of Chris Miyashiro, the visionary behind the film. Chris—also known as “Mowgli”—was born and raised in Hawai’i. After growing up surfing, skating and doodling in his notebook, Mowgli decided to pursue something a little different from his peers. This film is a children’s book style narrative that follows the travels of two characters around the world with their passions of art and wave riding. It is a story about embracing change and learning how we can use our talents for things much greater than ourselves.

Saturday: Photographer showdown
oct 12 2019 / 6:00pm

It’s not often that photographers get to showcase their work on the big screen, so we want to provide a platform that celebrates not only the craft, but the creativity behind still images that capture surfing, surf culture and the human spirit.

This year we will be inviting 5 x photographers to present a 5 minute slideshow set to music, and that takes the crowd on a compelling visual journey. It can include a life’s body of work, single or multiple themes, or a standout session or swell.

An adaptation of the photography challenge introduced at our last event, this year the photographers will take centre stage at The J and feature alongside our films screened on the Saturday night.
