Good Surf Wax – Episode 1

Director – Josh Rufford
Country – Australia
Year – 2018
Time – 1 min 8 secs
Language – English
Synopsis – Of all the people who should be treading as lightly as possible on Mother Earth, surfers would have to be at the top of the list. But here’s the thing. Most surf wax, one of simplest, most crucial ingredients in the surf bliss equation, is made from a petrochemical base. Meaning? That although you can’t see it, it breaks down into tiny particles, and seeps into the water and the food chain. A fish full of petrochemicals is a dead fish. Ditto for anything that eats it. Created by Josh Rufford Art Direction by Adam Harriden Music by Dear Doonan (recorded at Thomas Studios). We are also currently working on Episode 2!

salt of the earth

Director – Dean Saffron
Country – Australia
Year – 2018
Time – 4.42min
Language – English
Synopsis – Tom Wegener’s story as a master shaper based in the Australian community, where he makes amazing traditional handmade wooden surfboards. He’s an icon as both a shaper and an all-around character. “It’s like a symphony as you peel the wood off with your hand tools,” he says. “And there’s so much to the character of every piece of wood.” Tom Wegener has long been considered a master shaper, but it is in the genre of finless craft that he has really earned his rep. In this short film he strives to articulate why wood is so special to work with and ride. Between nose rides Tommy champions the toxin free aspect of wooden boards and encourages surfers to get in the garage and go D.I.Y with a plank and a planer. Tracks magazine

Save Martha Lavinia

Director – Matty Hannon
Year – 2019
Time – 4:16min
Country – Australia
Language – English
Synopsis – Our Surfrider crew just returned from King Island, Tasmania with Surfrider Ambassador, Barton Lynch where we met with the local community to hear their views on the proposed Tassal fish farms threatening Martha Lavinia Beach surf break. Their views were unanimous – No to fish farms on King Island. Not only do these farms threaten the world famous surf break but the broader community is also extremely concerned about the threat of disease, fish escapes and increased predators in the water that threaten not only their livelihoods but the reasons they choose to live in one of the most beautiful and pristine parts of the world. They fish, dive or surf daily and this would be threatened by an outside company coming in to capitalise on the natural, pristine conditions.

Spot Stands Up

Director – Zack McCune
Year – 2019 (based on 1926 original silent movie)
Time – 2min
Country – USA
Language – English
Synopsis – From the oldest known dog surfing film comes, SPOT STANDS UP – a silent movie rescored by Larisa Berger and reanimated by Zack McCune. While the earliest known surf film was made by Thomas Edison in 1906, the earliest known dog surfing film is from 1930. That film features “Night Hawk” the dog, surfing with his owner in the film “On the Waves at Waikiki.” But in watching older surf movies on the Internet Archive, Berger and McCune discovered that the 1926 “Sons of the Surf” film features a dog surfing and even NAMES the dog shown. Surely, this makes “Spot” the oldest known dog surfer, a mythic “king” of today’s YouTube and Instagram dog surfing stars, and deserving of overdue recognition. To celebrate Spot’s mastery, McCune recut and reanimated Robert C. Bruce’s 1926 film to focus on the dog. Berger then composed an original soundtrack for the silent film, with a synth-based theme for Spot. With credit to the Prelinger Archive in San Francisco for the original footage, and the Internet Archive for hosting it online.

Director – Chris Miyashiro
Year – 2019
Time – 1:12:18min
Country – Hawai’i
Language – English

Synopsis – A crowd favourite in film festivals around the world, In Dancing Days Of Dawn is a wild journey to find purpose and meaning. This story is a poetic peak into the mind of Chris Miyashiro, the visionary behind the film. Chris—also known as “Mowgli”—was born and raised in Hawai’i. After growing up surfing, skating and doodling in his notebook, Mowgli decided to pursue something a little different from his peers. This film is a children’s book style narrative that follows the travels of two characters around the world with their passions of art and wave riding. It is a story about embracing change and learning how we can use our talents for things much greater than ourselves.
